The body that turns up in Bron's garden one day has actually been there for decades, hidden deep, and he died of natural causes. Just rebury him and carry on as normal, right?

Great story! I enjoy the paranormal and witchy in fiction and this really surprised me by its detail and depth! I loved the way the author dealt with traditional supernatural characters--she does a great job of sticking to their traditional traits rather than simply make up stuff about them or even make up new types. Having read the Mabinogion, among other books of that ilk, I am familiar with the myths and characters she depicts. I also thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Wales. I kept going to a Welsh-to-English online dictionary to hear and translate some of the Welsh words. I look forward to more books from this author; I predict that her writing, already pretty darn good, will just get better and better.Product details

What The Cat Dragged In The Celtic Witch Mysteries Book 1 eBook Molly Milligan Reviews
The cutesy cover art does no favors to this excellent novel, which is well-written and intriguing. Despite the youth of the two main characters, this is no "teenage witch", over-the-top tale of magical nonsense, but (with the possible exception of the--spoiler alert!--shape shifter) a wonderful use of eclectic pagan ethics and beliefs and practices, along with a believable touch of the supernatural, to further the solution of the mystery. The setting in Wales is likely, to American readers, almost as alien as many of the concepts presented in the story. I am the most persnickety of readers, but found only one or two errors in grammar, so the book is well-edited. A genuinely excellent and enjoyable book.
The country is England, the state is Wales, the town is Llanfair and we meet Bronwen (Bron) a Welsh hedge witch and healer.Bron lives with her cantankerous seer Great Aunt Dilys and Harkin her familiar cat. Bron's American cousin Maddie flies in to stay with them. Bron is working in her garden and unearths a body. The body belongs to a ghost by the name of Robert Cameron, who in life lived in the town. Bron likes and dates a local police officer named Adam whom she calls about the body. Maddie is a witch also and is trying to understand who and what she is. Lots of who did what and why and lots of suspects and people are connected to Robert the ghost. A great read with an outstanding ending. On to book 2.
I truly had fun reading through this magical mystery. The author provides some instruction on how to pronounce the Welsh words sprinkled across the book, which as an American, I found extremely useful.
The book starts out with more of a modern, realistic magical touch with things getting a little more magic as you go along. A good introduction for anyone interested in modern magic as well as magical realism.
It's hard not to like Bron, the main character, even though she's so foreign from most of us - and I don't mean where she's from. Bron's got a little problem that means she's pretty removed from the technical world, but that's okay, because she stays busy with gardening, healing, and helping out her community. Her aunt, Dylis, is the kind of old woman I think most of us hope we are at that age. She's honest in that way that only older folk can get away with and not afraid to enjoy life. Bron's cousin Maddie is another star of the book. Maddie is lost and confused, unsure of who she is, yet bright and friendly - the kind of person who can make fast friends with most people she talks to.
As in most mysteries, these characters seem as lost as the reader most of the way through the mystery, which involves a ghost who isn't malevolent but does have a sense of humor that could scare the unknowing.
I enjoyed getting to know all the characters, learn about some different magicks, and finally see the mystery come to a close. A fun book with all-too-real characters, and - of course - a wonderful cat.
This witchy murder mystery, or not truly a murder, is set in Llanfair, Wales. The story entails use of Welsh mythology, folklore, and local belief systems.
Bronwen is a witch who is a natural healer. Her cat brings injured animals, even 'lost' persons to Bron to aid. Bron, by necessity, must live in the old ways...electricity shorts etc.
A body decades old is found in Bronwen's garden. Who? Why? What? are questions that present themselves as well as the ghost of the man found. Now, it becomes crucial to find out how to put the spirit to rest.
Along for the adventure is, Maddie, Bron's American cousin. Maddie is on a quest of her own and the answers are so interesting.
This book was suggested and then given to me from a dear friend, Jenny. I'm so glad she introduced me to this series. I look forward to future tales from Ms. Milligan.
The charm simply oozes from the pages. Characters are just as
quirky as one could wish for. The magic is light and fresh and
subtle and all the good things a reader could want. The story and the mystery are centered, grounded, easily
understood. And the prose is clean and unassuming with enough style to add
flavor and color without drawing the attention away from the story
itself.
(In particular, the moments when Bronwen is squarely doing magic, her "hedge riding" as she calls it, I find to be absolutely sublime...just very well done. The magical elements have a light, natural quality to them that feels as if the author is allowing the reader to share in a secret rather than a heavy handed hollywood special effect fest. Lovely!)
The mystery is threaded through and through with characters I wanted to know more about and the book's end brought it all together in a way that was satisfying and keeps me very much intrigued to read another book by this author.
Strongly recommended.
